CVABOUT ME

Hey guys, my name is Jason Allen and I am from Larne, County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Born on the 29th April 1988 and now 21, I currently work as a web developer at Spiral Software in Cambridge. I studied Computer Science at the University of Southampton from 2006 until 2009.

My main interests include web design, software development, video editing and radio. While at university I worked part time for SUSU (Southampton University Students' Union) as an IT Support Assistant and this gave me the confidence to work inside of computers. I hadn't really had the opportunity to fiddle around with computers much as we only had the one at home and if I did something wrong with that...I would be in trouble! SUSU also gave me the chance to work over the summer in 2007 and 2008 to film and edit for their promotional DVD to send to the freshers starting in the new term. This gave me the chance to work with professional video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro. SUSU has also taught me to get on with Macs. Previously I had never liked to touch a Mac because it was so different from a PC.

Since October 2008, I have been involved with the Union's radio station - Surge. Even though I have finished my degree, I still keep in touch with everyone at Surge and help out technically where possible. Their technical system was originally put together by Nick Humfrey including the integration of a jukebox request system (groundbreaking for its time) called TotalRequest. I developed a live-assist playout system called SurgeCart which replaced their current playout system WaveCart! The software features automatic logging of playlist tracks as well as an improved search facility and silence analysis. In January 2009, I was appointed as the Software Manager on the Surge commitee until June 2009.

In 2004, I was watching Click Online on BBC News 24 (as it was in those days) and came across a website they mentioned called CMP Radio. This was an Internet radio station that allowed any member of the public to present an hour long show across the web. I presented 25 shows until the station's closure in December 2004. The station was automated by a technological feat, AuDEC Professional and has since got me interested in audio related software. A new station started in May 2008 called Reach On Air. This station is virtually the same concept as CMP Radio. I presented more than 60 shows on the station until uni and work commitments got too great!

As far as personal life goes, my favourite holiday destination is Florida as my parents own a house out there in Ocala (free accommodation!). Other holiday destinations over the years include Sandford Park near Poole in Dorset, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. For many years my dad edited videos for our holidays, adding music and making them more interesting for others to watch by making them only 20-25 minutes long. Unfortunately, these videos were in VHS format and were soon going to become obsolete. In December 2008 we digitised them onto DVD to keep the memories alive!
